World Whisky Day lands on the third Saturday of May - 16 May in 2026 - a global toast to the "water of life." And while Scotland and Ireland get the headlines, South Africa quietly makes some of the most awarded whisky on earth, just up the road from Cape Town.
The water of life
The word whisky comes from the Gaelic uisge beatha - "water of life." Monks are widely credited with bringing distillation to Scotland and Ireland centuries ago, originally for medicine. Over time, local barley, peat smoke and oak ageing turned a rough spirit into a craft, and Scotch whisky became the global benchmark. Today "whisky" (or "whiskey" in Ireland and the US) spans single malts, blends, bourbons and grain whiskies from every corner of the world.
The day itself
World Whisky Day was started in 2012 by a Scottish student, Blair Bowman, as a way to make whisky fun and welcoming for everyone - not just connoisseurs. Today it is celebrated in dozens of countries with tastings, distillery tours and a great many drams.
South Africa's whisky on the world stage
An hour from Cape Town, in Wellington, sits the James Sedgwick Distillery - the only commercial whisky distillery in Africa. Its story runs back to Captain James Sedgwick, who sailed into Table Bay in 1850; his sons set up on the banks of the Berg River in 1886.
- Three Ships - launched in 1977 as Africa's first commercial whisky. Under master distiller Andy Watts (an English cricketer-turned-distiller who trained in Scotland), the distillery began producing both malt and grain whisky under one roof - a rare feat. In 2025, Three Ships Bourbon Cask was crowned World's Best Blended Whisky at the World Whiskies Awards.
- Bain's Cape Mountain Whisky - a smooth, easy-drinking single grain whisky that has repeatedly been named among the world's best grain whiskies.
In other words: you do not need to fly to the Highlands to drink world-beating whisky. Some of it is made on Cape Town's doorstep.
